Induced defense and its cost in two bryophyte species

چکیده

Premise Current knowledge about defense strategies in plants under herbivore pressure is predominantly based on vascular plants. Bryophytes are rarely consumed by herbivores since they have ample secondary metabolites. However, it unknown whether bryophytes induced defenses against herbivory and there a trade-off between growth bryophytes. Methods In an experiment with two peatland bryophytes, Sphagnum magellanicum Brid. S. fuscum (Schimp.) H. Klinggr., kinds of herbivory, clipping scissors grazing mealworms (Tenebrio molitor L.) were simulated. At the end experiment, we measured traits, carbon-based compounds (total phenolics cellulose) storage nonstructural carbohydrates) these species. Results Grazing but not increased total C:N ratio reduced biomass production height increment. A negative relationship was found fuscum, indicating growth–defense that species-specific. sugar starch content fuscum. Either or had no effect chlorophyll fluorescence (including actual maximum photochemical efficiency photosystem II) except significant observed. Conclusions Our results suggest can this come at cost growth. These findings advance our earliest land

Endozoochory by slugs can increase bryophyte establishment and species richness

Herbivory can aff ect plant community composition and diversity by removing biomass and reducing light competition. Herbivory may particularly benefi t low growing species such as bryophytes, which are frequently limited by light competition. Gastropods are important herbivores of seed plants and cryptogams, furthermore, they can disperse propagules such as seeds and spores via endozoochory. Ho...

Genetic diversity of Nostoc symbionts endophytically associated with two bryophyte species.

The diversity of the endophytic Nostoc symbionts of two thalloid bryophytes, the hornwort Anthoceros fusiformis and the liverwort Blasia pusilla, was examined using the tRNA(Leu) (UAA) intron sequence as a marker. The results confirmed that many different Nostoc strains are involved in both associations under natural conditions in the field. The level of Nostoc diversity within individual bryop...

A Primary Survey on Bryophyte Species Reveals Two Novel Classes of Nucleotide-Binding Site (NBS) Genes

Due to their potential roles in pathogen defense, genes encoding nucleotide-binding site (NBS) domain have been particularly surveyed in many angiosperm genomes. Two typical classes were found: one is the TIR-NBS-LRR (TNL) class and the other is the CC-NBS-LRR (CNL) class. It is seldom known, however, what kind of NBS-encoding genes are mainly present in other plant groups, especially the most ...

How to describe species richness patterns for bryophyte conservation?

A large amount of data for inconspicuous taxa is stored in natural history collections; however, this information is often neglected for biodiversity patterns studies. Here, we evaluate the performance of direct interpolation of museum collections data, equivalent to the traditional approach used in bryophyte conservation planning, and stacked species distribution models (S-SDMs) to produce rel...
